Some of the baby birds I met on this recent round of field work:
1. Limosa limosa, black-tailed godwit
2. Haematopus ostralegus, oystercatcher
3. & 4. Numenius phaeopus, Eurasian whimbrel
5. Tringa totanus, redshank
6. Charadrius hiaticula, common ringed plover
7. Pluvialis apricaria, European golden plover
I’m not anti-technology, I just think there’s something deeply sick about a society where robots make art and children work in factories.
The golf links lie so near the mill
That almost every day
The laboring children can look out
And see the men at play.(Sarah Norcliffe Cleghorn, c. 1910.)
Plus ça change.
My seagull friend
He seems to forget he has feet and when he realises he has some he stares at them for ages
